Panipat

Panipat is a historic town located in the state of Haryana. Being a distance of 90 km from Delhi on the Sher Shah Suri Marg, now known as Grand Trunk Road or NH1, this town has an important place in Indian history.
Legend has it that the city was originally developed by the Pandavas during the times of the Mahabharat. It was amongst the five cities founded by the Pandava brothers and was historically called Panduprashta. The three historic battles were fought in the wide plains of this town marking it a prominent place in Indian history. The first, second and third battles of Panipat were pivotal points in Indian history. While the first two battles helped the Muhghals tighten their hold over northern India, the third battle of Panipat between the Afghans and the Marathas weakened the administration of the northern provinces and eventually paved the way for the British to come into to India.
PanipatPanipat in modern times, is known more as the “city of weaver”. The handloom industry is well developed here and the handloom products which are produced here such as durries, mats, table covers, blankets, bed covers and so forth, are exported to foreign countries. The handloom industry has helped and encouraged weavers and artisans in the weaving occupation to come here for work who have found flourishing employment opportunities in this town.

Being close to the cities of Delhi and Chandigarh, this town flourishes with tourists who come here to witness the battle grounds of the historic battles which were fought here and the remaining landmarks of its historic past. Tourists also delight in the handloom products in this region as they visit the various looms and shops here.
